Worked under Robert E. Barnett, one of the founders of the Engineering Geology Division of the Geological Society of America. Duties included:
  1. Petrographic studies and evaluations of concrete aggregate, riprap, armor stone, and hardened concrete, including forensic studies into potential causes of deterioration.
  2. Foundation studies including petrographic logging of rock core and bore-hole camera evaluations of foundation conditions at projects such as St. Lawrence Seaway, Niagara Falls stability studies (1968 - 1972), Oak Ridge National Laboratories (formerly the Atomic Energy Commission) and various navigational structures and dams within eastern U.S.
  3. Special microscopic studies on the effect of high vacuum on various minerals in support of NASA. In addition:
    • Participated in development of two mobile drilling rigs for use on the lunar landing rover.
    • Participated in development of a lunar soil simulant in support of lunar landing studies by EXTERRA division of the Corps of Engineers.
    • Development of a special material to be used by NASA as a lubricant between the rocket crawler tread and the launch pad.
1970-1972 USACE, Ohio River Division Laboratory.
Served as staff geologist and chief of the Concrete and Concrete materials unit. Work included petrographic studies as outlined above and bore-hole camera foundation studies at navigational structures, dams, and Oak Ridge National Laboratories. In addition, also served in the performance of stability studies of Niagara Falls during the dewatering of the American Falls. Also served as a consultant to Corps District offices within the Ohio River Basin area on matters pertaining to quality of rock materials being considered for engineering and construction utilization. Managed the staff of technicians with responsibilities involving concrete mix designs for various Corps of Engineers projects and evaluation of concrete aggregates, curing compounds, retarders, air-entraining agents and other concrete mix additives.
1972-1975 USACE, Ohio River Division Laboratory.
Served as staff geologist and assistant director of the laboratory. Responsible for the performance of rock mechanics studies in the evaluation of foundation materials for large structures. Projects included Sault Ste. Marie Locks, St. Lawrence Seaway, most of the navigation structures on the Ohio River, and many of the flood control reservoirs in the eastern U.S. Other geological responsibilities increased to serving as a consultant to Corps of Engineers Districts in the Great Lakes area on matters pertaining to the quality of sources of armor stone and changes to the guide specifications for breakwater, shore protection and confined diked disposal projects. Served on the USACE North Central Division Committee (Chicago) for development of guide specifications for armor stone. Served as acting laboratory director for a period of seven months.
1976-1990 USACE, Ohio River Division Laboratory.
Served as Chief Geologist and Laboratory Director. In addition to management responsibilities for the laboratory, served as a consultant to the Corps' District offices in eastern U.S. and to the Corps' Waterways Experiment Station on matters pertaining to the quality of rock used as riprap, slope protection, gabion-fill and armor stone. Continued to participate in rock mechanics studies of rock for foundations of structures.
1990-1995 USACE, Ohio River Division, Geotechnical Branch.
Monitored the activities of the Corps' District offices within the Ohio River Basin for appropriate course of action in development of geological information for various projects under consideration and in various stages of design and construction. Assisted the Department of Justice in litigation involving the former Department of Energy Fernald Superfund site at Fernald, Ohio. Maintained responsibility for provision of consultation services to other Corps offices in all matters pertaining to the quality of rock used as riprap, slope protection, gabion-fill and armor stone.
